This remarkable and very timely debut feature from talented writer-director Nora El Hourch brilliantly combines a contemporary coming-of-age tale with a dramatic exploration of the complex role of social media in the lives of its three teenaged protagonists. Amina, Djeneba, and Zineb, inseparable since childhood, are now fifteen and, in a world of selfies, #MeToo, and peer pressures see their friendship challenged. When one of them is subject to unwanted sexual advances by a local boy, they decide to create a scenario where they can record his next attempt and expose him as a danger. When Amina posts this video on social media, however, their friendship is suddenly shaken when issues of race, class, gender politics, and cultural privilege are raised in relation to the decision to post. Will this very special friendship survive? A perceptive drama, Sisterhood is never simple or reductive and offers a compelling portrait of the new personal and social challenges faced by young women in the technocentric 21st century.
